Scicence and Court Wiki

TASK: Students will work in small groups to produce a collaborative wiki space that illustrate an understanding of topics discussed in the unit, how to research court cases, and explain how science applies to the American justice system in the past and present. The wiki space should incorporate the use of at least three technology strategies that you have learned during the technology program.

Day 1 Objectives:

Students will be Able to:
1. Define Evolution in their own words
2. Evaluate social, cultural, and political events of the early 1900s

Opener:
Evolution
Evolution

Watch the short video below and in your virtual notebook:
  • Identify the objective of the video
  • Pose 1-2 questions you have
  • Find a similar image, event or topic to represent what you watched
The objective of the video was to show us what evolution is and how it happens throughout time.
What caused evolution to happen?
Is it still going on today?

3 Minute Pause

  • The key points so far are that evolutioin causes changes in species over time
  • I think evolution is very intersecting because it explains how us human have formed.

Do you think that scientific research and discovery might be in conflict with some values and ideals of the 1920's? Why or why not? Provide evidence from today's activities to support your response.

I think that scientific research and discovery was a conflict with the values and ideals of the 1920's. because for example the Ku Klux Klan at that time was a group of Christians that didnt want change to occur. Scientific research and discovery would cause change.

Summarizing Activity:

Now that we have investigated evolution and highlighted some of the events, opinions and trends of the 1920s:
evidence and analysis

1. Identify parallels between this topic and conflicts/events that are going on today.
A parallel between this topic and conflicts today, because there are still people today who have beliefs that dont accept some scientific topics.
2. Make an argument for or against the theory of Evolution supporting your argument.

I think that it is a good thing to know about scientific revolution so that we can know how our species got to be how it is today.

Day 2 Objectives:

Students will be Able to:
1.
Explain the controversy of teaching evolution in schools
2. Identify the different views about teaching evolution in schools
3. Evaluate the impact of the Scopes trial in America

Answer the following questions on the clip from the Simpson episode entitled, "Monkey Suit," in your notebook after watching the video:

1. What was the message of this cartoon clip?
The message of that cartoon clip was that there are two diiferent sides to how people were created and some believe one more than the other. Lisa was fighting for what she believed was right.

2. Do you think something like this could actually happen?
I think something like that could actually happen because it is in Texas today. If someone teaches that in Texas they would be put in jail.

Summarizing the trial:

What importance did each person/organization play in the case. Evaluate the perspective each person/organization had on the teaching of evolution in public schools. Do you agree with the outcome of the trial? Why or why not?\

Each person in the trial had an importance play in the case because they all had their own opinion on evolution or creationism. I agree with the outcome of the trial because John didnt rreally teach them he was actually a gym teacher and someone asked him to teach evolution when would sub for the bio teacher.

My Glog on the Scopes Trial

Day 3: Objectives

Students will be able to:
Explain how their Glog/Slide represents the signifcance of events that occurred during the Scopes Trial
Identify and explain the connection between science and the justice system in today's world
In my glog I put the letter because I thought that John would get a letter explaining why he was going to court so i made a letter telling about why the court was set up. The newsletter that i found I thought it related to whats going on today because evolution still does divide people and states. The piture of theman holding the dino is about creationism and the other one is about evolution because as we knnow the trial isnt only about John being blamed for teaching evolution its also about evolution vs. creationism there has always been a debate on that.

Opener:

  • In 10 words or less summarize the Scopes Trial
  • Find/Create a visual that best symbolizes the trial
  1. Debate
  2. Intersecting
  3. Publicty Stunt
  4. No real outcome
  5. Crowded
  6. Crazy

In the CSI game i explored the labs and did some experiments with DNA. I took some DNA from Greg and anazlyed it then helped him slove a crime that someone that did. It was fun and intersecting I enjoyed it and wish I could play more.
